Express HandlingPractically in every distribution center picking areas are divided into “fast, medium and slow moving articles. But normally, almost every order contains many different types of articles and for example not only just fast or just slow moving items. This means in practice that most orders will be split up: one part of the order, for instance, is picked at a fast moving items zone, the rest in a slow moving items zone. Before the orders can be send out, they have to be consolidated.With express handling, Axxom has developed a new picking concept. An express line is a special area functioning as a by-pass to other picking zones. Here products are stored according to order structure instead of storing by frequency. All orders, which could be processed completely in the express area will by-pass the other areas of the distribution centre. The benefit:
The express handling concept sounds quite simple, but is very successful in practice. In typical projects we achieved cost savings of millions of Euro and reduced delivery times significantly. But the results depend very much on the quality of the algorithm, which identifies the right article spectrum for assembling the express line area, considering a lot of restrictions and constraints.
