Success for Axxom at VDI Innovation Award Logistics 2009

ORion-PI® Express handling is best software solution and second in overall ranking 

Munich, April 3rd 2009 – ORion-PI® Express handling of Axxom has been awarded at this year's renowned Logistics Innovation Award of VDI (Association of German Engineers – largest engineering association in Western Europe with around 136.000 members). The software, being the best IT solution and second in overall ranking, enables the implementation of so called express areasreducing picking times of an order up to 65 percent without expensive investments in high-automated warehouse technology. ORion-PI® Express handling was already awarded as “Best Product” at this year`s trade fair LogiMAT in Stuttgart/Germany.

With the introduction of express areas, ORion-PI® Express handling allows a turn away from today´s common article assignment according to frequency like in conventional fast, medium and slow moving areas. Instead, products are assigned to express areas according to order structure in such a way, that as many orders as possible can be completed there at once. By this, orders only have to run through express stations and not through many different picking areas. Also, sorting efforts like in two-level picking processes are avoided. Key factor of success of this new concept is the assignment of the express areas with the proper article spectrum. Here, results depend very much on the quality of the algorithm, which identifies the right article spectrum for assembling the express area, considering a lot of restrictions and constraints.

While common software often generates no savings and sometimes even cause more efforts, the specially developed algorithm of ORion-PI® Express handling can achieve significant improvements.

The VDI Innovation Award Logistics 2009 is already Axxom`s third award in 2009. In March, the Munich-based company won the title as best product at trade fair LogiMAT. Additionally, Axxom`s CEO Dr. Christoph Plapp was announced as top supply chain expert by the US magazine Supply & Demand Chain Executive.
