13.10.09 - Migros uses Axxom solution for intralogistics and staff planning
Integrated intralogistics
and staff planning
Migros-Verteilbetrieb
Neuendorf AG implements software package of Axxom with AIX-based database in
its non-food logistics center in Neuendorf
Munich,
13th October 2009 – Migros-Group, biggest Swiss retail business, optimizes its
staff planning and intralogistics processes in its distribution center
Neuendorf with the solution ORion-PI® of Axxom
Software AG. Therefore, from spring 2010 Migros-Verteilbetrieb Neuendorf AG
(MVN AG) will use several modules of the software in its non-food warehouse which
allow an integrated staff, warehouse and space planning as well as material
flow simulations. With the new solution, MVN AG wants to significantly increase
transparency and efficiency at the logistics site.
A total of 47,000 SKUs are stored in the non-food
logistics center of MVN AG at Neuendorf, ranging from sporting goods and
electronic devices to cosmetics and many more. 5,000 to 8,000 pallets with an
average of 350,000 to 550,000 articles are sent out to the stores of the
Migros-Group per day. More than 700 employees ensure a smooth processing. To
further optimize processes in the logistics center, Axxom’s software ORion-PI® will be used for staff planning &
scheduling, warehouse and space management and material flow simulations.
Basis for all applications is a scale
model of the warehouse layout considering logistics processes from the
receiving office to the shipping department. This model obtains time components
for planning, simulation and optimization of processes – for example for routes
or order picking. Relying on this precise model, MVN AG is able to simulate the
material flow and to define upcoming workload in different working areas using
the order data of the warehouse management system. By analysis, simulations and
animations possible bottlenecks in the logistics processes can be predicted and
counteractions can be evaluated.
Analysis and simulations of the
material flow are also the basis for staff planning. Here, for operative use ORion-PI® allows to exactly calculate the required number
of employees in the different warehouse departments in the course of day based
on the workload allocation. By matching these personnel requirements with the
available workforce ORion-PI® identifies excess or
shortage of staff and generates
proposals for efficient rescheduling. In addition, the solution supports MVN AG
in annual planning and in developing the operation schedule with the help of
prognoses based on data of the previous year. The goal is to significantly
increase productivity in operative and long-term staff planning.
In warehouse and space
management, the new software enables MVN AG to conduct strategic layout
simulations and optimizations, tactical and operative warehouse space planning
as well as optimized storing of new products. Thus different picking or
replenishment strategies and warehouse assignments can be evaluated and
compared by using analysis based on current or past data.
At the Swiss company, ORion-PI® will access a data base that runs on the UNIX
operating system AIX – the connected clients use Windows operating systems.
“With the implementation of ORion-PI® using an AIX based database the solutions
optimally fits in our existing IT infrastructure”, says Georg Zwald, director
information technology & organisation and member of the board of MVN AG.
“With ORion-PI® we are able to optimize our internal logistics
processes and at the same time to maintain a high-performance, homogeneous IT
infrastructure with low administration efforts.”
